Zagreb Airport seeks strategic partner to build new passenger terminal

An international, public tender for the selection of a strategic partner to build and operate the new passenger terminal is to be published in October 2010.

Zagreb, August 5th 2010:  Zagreb Airport has moved one step closer to making the new passenger terminal a reality with the government's decision to initiate a public call for tender, thus facilitating the selection of a strategic partner that will invest in the new passenger terminal and associated infrastructure.
The strategic partner will be granted a concession to build and operate the new terminal under conditions to be published October 15th, 2010.  Tender documentation is currently in preparation of the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure, the Ministry of Environmental Protection, Physical Planning and Construction as well as Zagreb Airport. In order to be eligible to participate, potential partners must be highly experienced in airport construction and internationally recognized in the area of international airport management.

The new passenger terminal has been planned in three phases. Each subsequent phase is dependent on an increase in traffic.
Phase one allows for the demands of up to 3.5 million passengers. The investment required to finance this phase is estimated at 120 million EUR for the terminal building (a building with three jet bridges (passenger boarding bridges), eight gates and outdoor parking zone, and an additional 25 million EUR for the new airport ramp spanning 132,000m². A large zone, immediately adjacent to the new terminal, has been set aside for commercial services including a hotel, with a congress and business centre. Phase one is planned to be completed by Q4 2014 or Q1 2015.

Phase two sees the construction of an additional south-west pier with nine or ten jet bridges, covered car parking facilities and the extension of the ramp to 330,000 m². This phase accommodates a further increase in traffic allowing for up to 5 million passengers with an additional investment estimated at 72 million EUR.
Phase three caters for traffic of over 5.5 million passengers annually. Investment here is estimated at 44 million EUR.

Zagreb Airport has recently completed the reconstruction of its runway as well as the modernization of the interior and the facade of its sole terminal. By 2011, prior to the new terminal’s completion, the airport plans to annex today’s terminal with a hall measuring some 6000m², ensuring improved handling of passengers in a more spacious check-in hall as well as accelerated baggage handling for up to 3 million passengers annually (1500 passengers per hour).
Upon completion of the annex, new commercial services will be introduced in today’s terminal, including “landside” restaurants and shops. As soon as the new terminal is operational, today’s terminal building will be given a commercial function.
Zagreb Airport, a publicly owned company, is Croatia’s largest airport and handles over two million passengers and 12 000 tonnes of cargo annually.
